Alex Petcu: In Time
In Time is my solo album, released on RTÉ lyric fm, with a wide range of music for percussion.
RTÉ lyric fm asked me to record this album in 2015. I wanted it to show the variety of music I regularly perform, so rather than focusing on one composer or theme, I chose a body of work that has helped me get to where I am today. I also wanted the music to be accessible to a wide audience, so that everyone could get a glimpse of what percussion has to offer.
The album mixes original music for percussion with transcriptions from the classical repertoire. Alongside works by composers such as Steve Reich, who have contributed immensely to the percussion repertoire, there are pieces by less well-known composers whose music I've worked on over the years and that has influenced me in different ways. For the arrangements, I chose pieces where I felt I could add something or bring out something new. Some things are inevitably lost when a piece is transcribed, but a different instrument can also reveal an aspect of the music that wasn't as clear in the original.
